North Humberside
North Humberside encompasses a large area north of the River Humber. The name largely refers to the former postal county in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England. Communities within North Humberside are located within the East Riding of Yorkshire and Kingston upon Hull. The post county was first established in 1974, incorporating areas of Humberside including Kingston upon Hull and Beverley. Other towns in the area include Bridlington, Driffield, Goole, Brough, Cottingham, Hessle, Hornsea, North Ferriby and Withernsea. The postal county of North Humberside was abolished in 1996 by the Royal Mail, coinciding with the abolition of Humberside as a local government in the same year.
The largest community in North Humberside is Kingston upon Hull, a city of 256,100 people according to the 2011 Census. Founded in the 12th century, Hull occupies an area of 71.45 square kilometres or 27.59 square miles. Situated on the north bank of the Humber Estuary at the mouth of the River Hull, the city's economy has been traditionally supported by seafaring and trading. For centuries, economic activities have main focused on whaling and seafishing. Kingston upon Hull's port is one of the city's largest sources of direct and indirect employment. Industry, particularly in the chemical and health care sectors, is also a significant economic driver. Major employers in the city include the University of Hull, BP, Smith & Nephew, and Reckitt Benckiser. Other main economic sectors in the area include retail and cultural industries.
North Humberside is also home to the historic market town of Beverley within the East Riding of York. Founded in the 8th century, the town's population was estimated at 18,624 during the 2011 Census. A popular tourist destination in the region, notable attractions in the community include the Beverley Minster, the 15th century North Bar, and the Beverley Racecourse. The town is also a vibrant festival town with music and food related events held during the year. North Humberside also includes the port town of Goole, the seaside resorts of Withernsea and Hornsea, the sea fishing port of Bridlington, and the shipbuilding centre of Hessle.
